Does the colour of your vehicle matter to insurers?

Does the colour of your vehicle affect your insurance premium? It may sound ridiculous that something so small could have such an impact. So, we’re going to set the record straight once and for all.

Insurance companies take many factors into account when calculating the risk of insuring your vehicle; these factors can include the following:

  • The make and model of the vehicle you drive.
  • Where you park your vehicle during the day and at night.
  • Your driving experience and claims history.
  • The ‘visibility’ of the vehicle on the roads.

You don’t get charged extra for driving a cherry-red vehicle or how common the colour is. Colour can affect the visibility of your vehicle on the road, as darker vehicles are harder to see in low light, thus increasing the chances of an accident. Whereas lighter and brighter coloured vehicles are more visible. They stand out, and they’re easier to spot in low light.

The good news for owners of darker vehicles is that the colour of your vehicle isn’t a factor when it comes to your premium.

No matter the colour of the vehicle you drive, always be sure to stay safe on the road.

Fun fact: Did you know that the three most popular vehicle colours in South Africa are white, silver and grey?
